Design Directions Several new color trends are
emerging, and have been redirected since September. Special effects and finishes such as semi-lustrous metallics and matte finishes will continue to make their mark, but with less iridescence and more
luminescence. The new look adds dimension, depth and sheen. This direction embraces the interconnection of metals in design and a combination of warmth emitted by natural materials sought out by
many companies.
Continuing at the beginning of the new millennium, a direction toward historic reference exists and remains an influence. Comfort materials such as natural wood, suede, wool,
linens, and cottons dominate current directions. A well worn patina renders a deep sense of security.
Environmentally influenced techno-naturals, including strong gray influences and
future brights or atmospheric, exhilarating tones are emerging as trends. The brights celebrate the reds and blues giving patriotic recognition to our nations colors, when grouped with a
proportionate amount of white. While important now, the patriotic theme is less important as a spatial color direction, more important as a personal fashion choice. However, blues remain very
popular and will likely continue some time into the future.
J S D A Inc. revels in the opportunity to sense the pulse of society and optimize those directions for individual client
personalities. We remain at the forefront of design directions and look forward to bringing you the latest innovations. |
"To design is to plan and organize, to order and relate and to control.
In short it embraces all means opposing disorder and accident. Therefore it signifies a human need and qualifies man's thinking and doing." -- Joseph Albers |

Lighting Directions Layering light in space produces the most
satisfying aesthetic environments. In order to provide comfort lighting, we see a demand for more tradition lighting techniques. The necessary general illumination in any space can come from cove
lighting or exposed fixtures. Light sources can include a second source of indirect light, which may be switched separately for various light levels and looks. Adding a dimmer increases the range
of moods produced through illumination.
Feature lighting, such as recessed adjustable fixtures or track fixtures will highlight moveable objects, i.e. art, furniture or a variety of
displays. The poignant light source will add a dramatic touch to the object featured.
Common light fixtures positioned at the center point of a ceiling provide dual function. It is a
source of bright, indirect light for shadowless illumination for performing tasks requiring higher levels of light. The concept of a centered fixture is becoming less and less viable as spaces
transition into multifunctional areas. Adjustable lighting plays a bigger role in addressing the multiple needs. Some pendant lights offer the flexibility of a change in height which
assists in the multiple functioning.
Accent lighting is still required to fill a space and provide the proper highlights. Walls, additional work areas or furniture areas and plants are addressed
next. Every piece of art on the walls, or in a space do not require specific lighting. Care is taken to consider the color temperature and lamp type where MR-16's warmly lighting humans, retail
displays and food.
Plants can be uplighted, downlighted or both. The leaf characteristics and the resulting shadowing is carefully orchestrated to produce a pattern of light which
supports the overall design. More sculptural elements, like art or cactus, require lighting from a couple of angles to give the appropriate dimensional quality.
The most important criteria of
good lighting design for all spaces, including contemporary offices or residential spaces, is to have controllable light that lets the various spaces serve the intended purposes. Light layering is key
with attention to specifically designed fixtures which complete the design concept. |
